Mystery/Suspense/Thriller

In this police procedural, Chicago detective Sloane Pearson, appalled by vicious attacks on several women, is intrigued by the possibility that a serial rapist is on the loose. Frequently distracted by her father’s health issues and an unsatisfactory social life, she nonetheless doggedly pursues puzzling clues, despite indifference or interference from fellow detectives and active discouragement from more senior officers. Gilbert is an effective narrator, although characters are not always instantly recognizable. Listeners, however, will be pleased with her pacing and tonal ranges. A sensitive portrayal of a likable protagonist who eventually untangles the crime.—Booklist
