Gilbert competently reads four timeless Andersen stories: “The Ugly Duckling,” “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” “The Princess and the Pea,” and “The Nightingale.” The unabridged classic tales are well served by oral presentation. Gilbert raises and lowers tones to denote characters in her well-paced, finely modulated reading. Brief musical interludes bookend each story, making it easy to use this for classroom listening. Although there is nothing glitzy about the production (no sound effects, etc.), it is an adequate addition to collections lacking these classic tales on CD. Gilbert reads other audios produced by PlainTales, including Selected Just So Stories, Tales from the Arabian Nights, and The Tailor of Gloucester and Other Tales by Beatrix Potter. Booklist
