“Audiobook narration is…meaningful…We’re offering work to the world that the world needs. Stories save lives, and work…that is political and socially invested is a huge opportunity for me as an artist to create a legacy of my own.”
March was Women’s History Month, and I was so pleased to be invited to a special interview with master narrator Suzanne Toren and Jo Reed of AudioFile Magazine. Listen to the 30-minute interview here.
It was an honor to be invited to discuss not only the process of audiobook recording, but to hear Suzanne’s perspective on the art of narration. Suzanne has long been a leader in this extraordinary craft, and she’s been a personal inspiration to me.
Like Suzanne, throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege to perform many books that honor and celebrate strong women and their pursuit of justice and equality. In fact, narrating these powerful calls to action — work by women who believe that all people are created equal and that each citizen has a role to play in ensuring the actualization of that truth — is my calling and my purpose as a narrator.
Some notable narratives I’ve been privileged to perform by and about amazing women include the suspenseful, thrilling WOMEN’S HOUR by Elaine Weiss (Penguin Random House Audio), the remarkable, uplifting AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF ELEANOR ROOSEVELT (HighBridge), the shocking, moving STORY OF JANE by Laura Kaplan (Blackstone), and
the harrowing, humbling IT’S WHAT I DO by Lynsay Addario (Earphones Award Winner; Blackstone).
I hope to continue to do work that reveres and remembers incredible women in the future, and hope you’ll keep me in mind as you’re casting such titles.
